Principal Data Engineer

About the role

Mastercard’s Global Business Solution Center (GBSC) Tech team is seeking a Principal Data Engineer to lead the design and implementation of large‑scale data solutions across both cloud and on‑premise environments. The role focuses on building reliable, scalable pipelines and storage schemas that support Mastercard’s mission of powering an inclusive digital economy.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the subject‑matter expert on data engineering best practices and solution design within GBSC.
• Design and build end‑to‑end data pipelines and storage architectures (data lake, lake house, data warehouse) on platforms such as Cloudera, Apache Ozone, AWS S3, Databricks and Azure Data Fabric.
• Define reference architectures, design patterns, and engineering standards for data ingestion, transformation, storage, and consumption.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business data needs into scalable, ingestible solutions while ensuring compliance with governance, security, privacy and regulatory standards.
• Mentor team members, share emerging trends and promote continuous improvement in data engineering practices.

Required profile

• Proven experience designing and delivering end‑to‑end data pipelines using ETL/ELT patterns.
• Hands‑on expertise with data lake, lake house, and data warehouse architectures, including schema design and performance tuning.
• Strong understanding of data modeling concepts (dimensional, normalized, analytical).
• Ability to stay current with evolving data management technologies and apply them to real‑world problems.
