AI Engineer, Design

About the role

Nu is looking for an AI Engineer with a strong interest in design to join its Design Center of Excellence, the first engineer in a function of about 260 designers and researchers. The CoE turns local AI experiments into shared systems, and the person who scopes a system is also the one who builds it. You will work directly with designers and researchers.

Key responsibilities

• Build NuBrain, a global knowledge system that consolidates 30+ local repositories, focusing on context architecture, retrieval and token consumption
• Create tools that enable consistent, high-quality creative marketing and brand expression across markets
• Canonicalize roughly 100 locally built AI solutions, deciding what becomes standard and what is retired
• Decide the shape of each tool: plugin, MCP server, agent, Claude skill or full platform, and push back when the requested tool is not the right choice
• Architect and build increasingly agentic systems, sit with users to scope them, stand up or reuse infrastructure, write code and instrument the results with metrics and observability
• Own the roadmap for CoE tooling and act as the technical voice in a design organization

Required profile

• An outstanding, deeply experienced AI engineer who has spent years building systems others build on, recently working with AI models on token consumption, rate limiting, response latency and MCP servers
• A track record architecting UX systems such as design systems, component platforms, UI frameworks and front-end infrastructure
• Experience building agentic systems that help designers work faster and better
• Ability to lead projects and navigate stakeholders in a 260-person function that does not report to you
• Evidence of shipped work such as GitHub, live tools or demos; no design portfolio needed

The role suits design systems and UI platform engineers, design-tooling engineers, AI tool builders, founders and technical leads behind design-led products. It is not a general backend or infrastructure role, nor customer-facing mobile work, and it is not a research or modeling role.
