IBM iSeries (AS/400) Infrastructure Administrator L3

About the role

A highly experienced IBM AS/400 (iSeries) System Administrator (L3) is sought to lead the administration, optimization, modernization and support of enterprise IBM i environments. The role acts as the highest level of technical escalation, covering performance tuning, security, backup and recovery, high availability, disaster recovery, storage management and system upgrades. It also involves mentoring L1 and L2 support teams and coordinating with vendors.

Key responsibilities

• Mentor L1 operators and L2 administrators, develop operational procedures, standards and best practices, and generate executive reports on availability, performance and metrics.
• Design IBM i security policies, SSL and digital certificates, SSH and secure key generation, and support security audits and vulnerability remediation.
• Manage backup schedules, analyze backup failures and unsaved objects, and maintain backup and recovery strategies.
• Design, implement and test HA and DR environments, including failover, failback and RPO/RTO compliance.
• Administer internal and external storage, the Integrated File System (IFS), and perform storage expansion, disk balancing and tuning.
• Configure TCP/IP networking, manage job scheduling, and administer enterprise tape libraries, firmware upgrades and media lifecycle.
• Plan and execute OS upgrades, PTF management, and application deployments across IBM i partitions.
• Install, configure and maintain Hardware Management Consoles (HMC), including managed systems, frames, partitions, firmware upgrades and compatibility validation.
• Install, configure and maintain Virtual I/O Servers (VIOS), including Virtual SCSI, NPIV, Virtual Ethernet, SEA, SAN connectivity, LPAR disk management and VTLs for backup.
• Work 24x7 in an enterprise production environment, taking part in on-call rotations and leading maintenance, upgrades, migrations and DR exercises outside business hours.
• Coordinate with IBM and third-party vendors, take part in architecture reviews, and lead service improvement and governance meetings.
