Design Director – Cities

About the role

As a Design Director at Gensler you will lead collaborative teams to deliver innovative, high‑quality architecture solutions for city‑scale projects. You will shape design strategy, mentor emerging talent and champion sustainable, resilient design practices.

Key responsibilities

• Lead creative efforts on client architecture projects from programming and strategic planning through design development and production.
• Serve as the primary design interface with clients and consultants, representing Gensler at meetings and presentations.
• Champion diversity, inclusion and talent development by mentoring the next generation and recruiting from local design communities and universities.
• Act as climate champion, integrating sustainability goals, design resilience and purpose into every project.
• Advocate for Gensler’s IP tools (GBlox, GFloorz, GPlanet) and promote design‑technology workflows from concept to delivery.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture with 10+ years of project experience.
• Demonstrated knowledge of construction codes, regulations and building/zoning codes.
• Proven experience leading teams through all project stages, including construction administration.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, client relationship management and mentoring abilities.
