Structural Steel Detailing Estimator

About the role

The Structural Steel Detailing Estimator works within the Sales & Marketing department, supporting quoting and scope-change activities for structural steel detailing projects. The role reviews bid documentation, performs material take-offs, prepares accurate and timely quotes, follows up on issued quotations, identifies scope changes and prepares the work tickets needed to document and price additional or revised work. It requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail and a solid understanding of structural steel detailing workflows.

Key responsibilities

• Estimating and quoting: review bid drawings, specifications and documents to define project scope; prepare material take-offs and accurate estimates; prepare and check quotes against company standards; follow up with customers on quotes and pending decisions; keep records of bids, estimates, quotes and correspondence.
• Scope changes and work tickets: identify changes from BFA packages, design revisions, client requests, shop and field questions and meeting notes; evaluate the extra detailing work and its pricing; prepare work tickets and coordinate with project teams; group approved tickets into Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and follow up on customer approvals.
• Invoicing and admin: prepare invoices and backup documentation according to approved scope, archive pricing documentation and supporting calculations, and track receipt of payments.
• Other duties as assigned to support company operations.

Required profile

• Associate degree or higher in Construction Management, Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering, Business Administration or a related field is preferred.
• At least 2-4 years of experience in structural steel detailing, estimating, construction take-offs or related preconstruction roles; experience in the structural steel or construction industry is required.
• Experience performing material take-offs and preparing estimates or quotes from bid documents.
• Ability to read and interpret structural steel drawings, architectural drawings, design revisions and specifications.
• Excellent written and spoken English.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word.
• Bluebeam for quantity take-offs and document review (required).
• Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Planner.
• Knowledge of ANSI/AISC 360-22 and AWS D1.1:2020 is an asset.
• Familiarity with structural steel detailing software such as SDS2 is an asset.
