Substation Engineer – Protection & Controls

About the role

We are looking for a Substation Engineer to design and implement protection and control systems for electric utility infrastructure projects across the United States, while being based in our Bogotá office. The role involves creating detailed engineering drawings, performing calculations, and supporting SCADA integration for high‑voltage substations.

Key responsibilities

• Develop substation design drawings, including single‑line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and relay panel layouts.
• Prepare and review protection and control design packages, perform engineering calculations (battery sizing, voltage drop, conduit fill), and create technical specifications.
• Apply relay protection schemes for transmission and distribution substations and support SCADA integration.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (civil, structural, telecom, project management) to ensure compliance with U.S. utility standards and codes.
• Support construction activities, field investigations, and issue resolution during project execution.

Required profile

• 5+ years of substation engineering experience with a focus on protection and control.
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
• Proficiency in English (B2 level or higher) and strong communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced consulting environment.

Required skills

• MicroStation and AutoCAD.
• Relay protection schemes, relay logic development, and modern digital relays.
• Knowledge of NESC, IEEE, IEC 61850, and other utility industry codes.
• Basic understanding of SCADA systems and substation communications.
• Electrical engineering calculations for substation design (battery sizing, voltage drop, conduit fill).
