Freelance AI Trainer – American Sign Language (ASL) Specialist

About the role

We are seeking an American Sign Language (ASL) expert to help train large‑scale language models. As a freelance AI trainer, you will provide high‑quality ASL data that improves AI translation, accessibility, and communication tools.

Key responsibilities

• Interact with AI models on real‑world ASL scenarios and theoretical linguistic questions.
• Verify linguistic accuracy, cultural appropriateness, and capture error traces.
• Document failure modes in ASL‑to‑English translation, classifier usage, facial expressions, and spatial grammar.
• Suggest improvements to prompt engineering and evaluation metrics.

Required profile

• Fluent in American Sign Language with deep knowledge of Deaf culture, visual linguistics, and regional variations.
• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Deaf Studies, Sign Language Interpreting, Linguistics, or related field (preferred).
• RID certification, teaching experience, or community interpreting projects are a plus.
• Strong metacognitive communication skills – ability to “show your work”.

Required skills

• Expertise in ASL grammar, syntax, non‑manual markers, and fingerspelling.
