Director, Product Design

About the role

Deel is an all-in-one payroll and HR platform for global teams, combining HRIS, payroll, compliance, benefits, performance and equipment management. As Director of Product Design, you will own the design agenda for a major area of the platform and be accountable for how it connects to the rest of the platform. You will lead a team of designers, set the bar for craft and judgment, and shape strategy alongside Product and Engineering leadership as a peer. The specific product area you lead will be matched to you during the interview process.

Key responsibilities

• Build and run a design team of typically five to nine designers in a flat structure, hiring and developing talent, setting craft standards and deciding where to invest design capacity
• Shape the area's strategy with Product and Engineering leadership, including where AI takes over and where humans stay in the loop, and hold the design point of view under scrutiny from company leadership
• Close the gap between different parts of the platform so users such as payroll admins, employees, managers and support agents have a coherent experience, often without formal authority
• Lead how AI changes both the product and the team's way of working, shaping AI-powered customer experiences and the tools and workflows that make the team faster
• Hold senior Product, Engineering and business stakeholder relationships, and contribute to shared design standards, hiring practices and AI-forward workflows across the design organization
• Own the outcomes of what ships in your area: design quality, business impact and whether the work stands up to leadership scrutiny

Required profile

• 10+ years in Product Design, with current or recent experience at Director level or equivalent scope
• Proven track record leading a team of seven or more designers, including hiring, developing talent and setting craft standards
• Experience at growth-stage or scaled SaaS, fintech or technology companies; HR, payroll or workforce product experience is a plus
• Strong craft across interaction and visual design, and comfort with complex B2B and enterprise products serving multiple personas
• Track record of design decisions shifting outcomes with Product, Engineering and business leadership
• Strong influence and alignment with Director-level peers in Product and Engineering without a reporting line
• Has materially changed how you and your team work with AI in the last 12-18 months, with a considered view on where humans stay in the loop
• Data-savvy, comfortable measuring success through product and business outcomes, and able to make good decisions under pressure
