Engineering Manager - Distributed Systems Testing (Python / Go)

About the role

Canonical is hiring an Engineering Manager for its Distributed Systems Testing team, which runs the quality engineering platform that validates and deploys distributed systems across Canonical's cloud portfolio. The team ensures the performance, correctness, resilience and interoperability of cloud solutions built with technologies such as Juju, Terraform, OpenStack and Kubernetes, across bare-metal, private and public cloud environments. This is a globally remote role, typically leading a team concentrated in a major time zone such as EMEA or the Americas.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, coach and develop a team of software and quality engineers from graduate to senior level, setting clear expectations and ensuring timely delivery.
• Shape technical strategy, architecture, roadmap and engineering standards with senior engineers.
• Guide the development of automated testing infrastructure and improve CI pipelines, testing tools and reporting.
• Help engineering teams adopt effective distributed-systems testing practices and tooling.
• Contribute through design and code reviews, debugging and hands-on engineering where appropriate.
• Represent the team with stakeholders and collaborate across Canonical on quality engineering, infrastructure and developer experience.

Required profile

• Exceptional academic track record from high school and university.
• Experience leading, coaching and mentoring software engineers.
• Professional software engineering experience with Python or Go.
• Expertise in distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, quality engineering or a closely related domain.
• Experience in an agile environment and ability to organise a team to deliver high-quality results.
• Ability to travel twice a year for company events, up to two weeks each.

Required skills

• Modern software testing processes, strategies and automation.
• Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
• Strong technical judgement in code reviews, architecture discussions and software design.
• Excellent written and spoken English.
