Protection & Control Engineer – Hydro & Dams

About the role

WSP is looking for a Protection & Control Engineer specialized in hydroelectric and dam projects. You will join a multidisciplinary team to design, develop, and implement protection and control systems across the full project lifecycle, from concept to commissioning and operational support.

Key responsibilities

• Design protection and control schemes for hydroelectric plants, dams, substations, and associated electrical infrastructure.
• Develop protection philosophies, relay settings, and control strategies for generation and transmission systems.
• Prepare engineering studies, technical specifications, single‑line diagrams, control schematics, wiring diagrams, and relay logic documentation.
• Conduct protection coordination, short‑circuit, arc‑flash, and system performance studies.
• Review electrical designs for compliance with codes, standards, and project requirements.
• Integrate protection and control systems with SCADA, automation, and monitoring platforms.
• Support factory acceptance tests (FAT), site acceptance tests (SAT), commissioning, and system energisation.
• Collaborate with civil, structural, mechanical, hydrotechnical, instrumentation, and automation specialists.
• Provide technical guidance on vendor equipment and support dam‑safety modernization projects.
• Prepare technical reports, calculations, deliverables, and client presentations.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering (Master’s preferred).
• 6‑9 years of experience in protection and control for hydro‑generation, substations, or large‑scale infrastructure.
• Professional Engineer designation or eligibility.
• Fluent English and French for client and stakeholder communication.
