Staff Software Engineer (Java + React/Angular)

About the role

Abstra, a nearshore tech talent services company, is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to design, develop and scale core products. You will work across the stack, building backend services, frontend experiences and cloud-native applications, while providing technical leadership and mentorship. The position is 100% remote, based in Colombia, with working hours between CST and EST.

Key responsibilities

• Architect and build scalable, secure backend systems in Java, Kotlin or other JVM languages.
• Lead design and implementation of core components on cloud-native services such as Kubernetes, Docker and AWS/GCP/Azure.
• Translate business requirements into technical solutions with product management and cross-functional teams.
• Integrate security into CI/CD pipelines and promote DevSecOps practices.
• Mentor engineers, review code and guide teams through technical challenges.
• Advocate for testing, observability, reliability and performance optimization.
• Evaluate open-source tools, improve data pipelines and distributed architectures, and lead incident response and reliability engineering.

Required profile

• 12+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Proven experience building scalable, production-grade full-stack applications.
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience in agile environments and strong communication skills.
• Passion for mentoring and coaching engineers.

Required skills

• Java and/or Kotlin, with RESTful APIs and microservices.
• Frontend frameworks such as React, Vue or similar JavaScript/TypeScript libraries.
• Cloud platforms (AWS, GCP or Azure) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
• CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and DevOps workflows.
