Senior Backend Software Engineer (Java, Spring Boot)

About the role

A remote, 12+ month contract for a Senior Backend Software Engineer in LATAM. The team already runs on Java 21 and is upgrading frameworks and components, including moving from Dropwizard to Spring Boot and breaking parts of a monolith into microservices. After the migrations, the engineer moves into ongoing product development. The role suits engineers who can lead technical work independently and have deep Java expertise.

Key responsibilities

• Lead major-version upgrades and framework migrations (e.g., Dropwizard to Spring Boot) from planning through delivery
• Modernize legacy and monolithic components and help move them toward a microservices architecture
• Design, build and maintain Java microservices with Spring Boot and the wider Spring ecosystem
• Containerize and deploy services with Docker and Kubernetes
• Work with SQL Server to design, optimize and maintain application data
• Maintain strong automated test coverage so migrations and new features ship safely
• Contribute to new product development once migration work is complete
• Mentor peers and raise technical standards through code reviews and design discussions

Required profile

• 6+ years of professional backend development experience, mostly in Java
• Proven experience leading major-version upgrades and framework migrations on your own
• Experience building and supporting Java microservices in production
• Citizen of the country of employment or authorized to work there

Required skills

• Deep, hands-on expertise with Spring (Spring Boot, Spring Core, Spring Data)
• Working knowledge of SQL Server
• Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes
• Test automation (e.g., JUnit, Mockito, integration testing)
• Nice to have: Dropwizard, monolith-to-microservices modernization, Java 17/21
