Software Engineer – Secure Container Images

About the role

Canonical is looking for a Software Engineer to own the end‑to‑end lifecycle of Ubuntu‑based secure container images. You will turn open‑source software into signed, hardened artifacts that developers can trust and deploy at scale.

Key responsibilities

• Build and maintain a portfolio of high‑quality, hardened container images.
• Design and operate automated CI/CD pipelines for building, testing, scanning, signing, publishing and retiring images across multiple architectures.
• Write tooling and tests to assess security compliance and cloud‑native compatibility.
• Collaborate with community, product security, platform and infrastructure teams to keep the image portfolio up‑to‑date.
• Mentor junior colleagues and contribute to hiring.

Required profile

• Proficiency in Bash and Python.
• Experience with CI/CD systems such as GitHub Actions or Jenkins.
• Hands‑on experience building container images and using Docker, Podman or Kubernetes.
• Strong Linux systems knowledge, including package management and release engineering.
• Clear communication, end‑to‑end ownership and a willingness to share knowledge.
