Software Engineering Manager - Sustaining Engineering

About the role

Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, is hiring an Engineering Manager for Sustaining Engineering, a business-critical team that resolves software defects reported by customers across the stack from kernel to user-space applications and IaaS platforms. The role leads one of several regional teams reporting to the global Director of Sustaining Engineering. It is a globally remote position, with up to 10% travel for internal and external events.

Key responsibilities

• Manage and lead a distributed team of engineers, and hire, coach, mentor and guide their career development
• Manage and measure KPIs and training, and support timely delivery of bug fixes, patches and other technical solutions for Ubuntu, OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, Juju and MAAS
• Represent Canonical in customer interactions and set expectations with other engineering teams, senior management and external stakeholders
• Advocate modern software development practices and grow a healthy, collaborative engineering culture
• Collaborate with other teams in the organisation

Required profile

• Professional software delivery experience using C, C++, Go, Python or similar
• Knowledgeable and passionate about software development
• Leadership experience organising and prioritising complex problem resolution and bug fixes
• Strong commitment to testing methodologies and maintainable code quality
• Excellent verbal and written English
• Linux experience, preferably Ubuntu; experience with Open Source and Open Source business models
• People management experience in a support organisation is a strong plus

• Version control systems such as Git
• Debugging tools such as gdb or crash
• Programming in C, C++, Go or Python
