Substation Engineer (Protection & Controls)

About the role

Pond & Company is seeking a Substation Engineer to support the execution and development of electric utility infrastructure projects across the United States, while being based in its Bogotá, Colombia office. The role focuses on designing and implementing substation protection and control systems, covering projects from distribution through transmission voltage levels. Candidates must submit their resume in English.

Key responsibilities

• Develop electric substation design drawings, including single-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, relay panel layouts and control building layouts.
• Prepare and review protection and control design packages for utility substation projects.
• Perform engineering calculations such as battery sizing, AC station service sizing, voltage drop and conduit fill calculations.
• Apply and implement relay protection schemes for transmission and distribution substations.
• Develop technical equipment specifications, construction specifications and engineering work scopes.
• Support SCADA integration through coordination with engineering and client teams.
• Review designs and deliverables for technical accuracy, quality and compliance with project requirements.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (physical design, civil, structural, telecommunications, project management) and ensure compliance with U.S. utility standards and industry codes.
• Support construction, field investigations and engineering issue resolution, and collaborate with U.S.-based teams to deliver projects on schedule.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience in substation engineering, focused on protection and control projects.
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Experience developing protection and control drawings and construction deliverables for utility substations.
• Preferred: experience supporting U.S.-based utility or consulting engineering projects.
• English at B2 level or higher, and strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced consulting environment.

Required skills

• Familiarity with relay protection schemes, relay logic and protection philosophies.
• Basic understanding of SCADA systems and substation communications.
• Proficiency with MicroStation and AutoCAD.
• Familiarity with NESC, IEEE and other utility industry codes and standards.
• Preferred: experience with transmission substations up to 500kV, modern digital relays, substation automation, IEC 61850 and relay coordination.
