Mechanical Designer / Senior Mechanical Designer

About the role

Hatch's Project Delivery Group (PDG) in Medellín is looking for a Mechanical Designer or Senior Mechanical Designer. The PDG delivers projects across the metals and mining, infrastructure and energy sectors, managing the full project lifecycle from studies to asset operation. The successful candidate produces mechanical layouts, models and drawings under the supervision of the Lead Mechanical Engineer.

Key responsibilities

• Produce mechanical equipment layouts, models and drawings according to project requirements.
• Design project-specific mechanical components or systems and understand owner/user requirements and the project mission.
• Help interpret plant PFDs, P&IDs and plant battery limits and constraints.
• Coordinate draftspersons and senior draftspersons on contract drawings, record keeping and monitoring.
• Do conceptual layout work, check drawings before release and prepare design details of standard elements.
• Prepare 3D equipment models, generate 2D drawings from the 3D model and follow mechanical and layout design criteria.
• Use vendor data and drawings to build and verify models, and create and maintain check sheets for equipment.
• Perform clash detection with other discipline models and provide material take-offs for estimating and bulk commodity purchases.
• Carry out operability and maintainability reviews and walkthroughs; familiarity with HAZOP studies is an advantage.

Required profile

• 10 to 15 years of extensive experience.
• Experience in a large, multidisciplinary EPC/EPCM project environment.
• Ability to lead small teams, plan and supervise others (for the senior role).
• Knowledge of industry and regulatory standards and codes relevant to the project.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Required skills

• Detailed design and modeling of mechanical plant layouts.
• At least exposure to similar 3D software; Bentley OpenPlant is preferred.
