Senior Counsel, Regulatory Legal – Latin America (Payments & Digital Assets)

About the role

Nu, a digital financial platform listed on the NYSE with more than 127 million customers across Brazil, Mexico and Colombia, is looking for a Senior Counsel, Regulatory Legal covering Latin America. This is a legal and regulatory strategy role, not a compliance operations role: you will define where licenses, registrations or regulated entities are needed and turn that analysis into a clear recommendation for the business. The role sits with Product, Compliance, Public Policy, Risk, Treasury and business leaders on new products and new markets.

Key responsibilities

• Advise on regulatory legal strategy for payments, money movement, wallets, stored value, digital assets, stablecoins and related products across Latin America.
• Maintain a country-by-country view of the regulatory perimeter, identifying which activities need licenses, registrations, approvals or local regulated entities.
• Lead the legal analysis for entering new markets and launching new products, features and business models.
• Work with Product and business teams to structure products in line with applicable law and propose alternative structures when the initial model hits a regulatory obstacle.
• Coordinate license and registration applications (payments, financial services, virtual assets) and support engagement with regulators, central banks and other authorities.
• Manage local external counsel and synthesize their input into practical recommendations.
• Create scalable frameworks, playbooks and decision trees so recurring questions are answered consistently across markets.
• Monitor regulatory developments and anticipate trends on stablecoins, tokenized money, crypto-assets and new payment infrastructure.
• Brief senior legal and business leaders on complex regulatory topics and act as a generalist legal business partner for new businesses, including product-related agreements.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer with the local bar license in the country where you will be based.
• In-house experience at a fintech, payments, crypto/digital-assets or banking company, working through regulatory, licensing and market-entry questions in Latin America.
• Experience with payments regulation and licensing, and with digital assets, crypto, stablecoins or blockchain-based financial products.
• Experience comparing regulatory regimes across several Latin American jurisdictions and familiarity with the South American landscape.
• Experience obtaining or maintaining financial-services, payments or digital-asset licenses or registrations.
• Fluent English and Spanish.

Nice to have

• Direct work with financial regulators or central banks, or prior experience at a financial-regulatory law firm, central bank or regulator.
• Regulatory policy experience for digital assets and payments.
• Banking or credit regulatory background combined with curiosity about digital assets.
• Familiarity with additional Latin American markets.
