Senior Software Engineer - Data Infrastructure

About the role

Backblaze works on its data infrastructure platform that underpins the B2 Object Storage and Computer Backup products. The engineer helps improve automation, observability and stability, increases throughput and drives architectural changes to meet the long-term needs of the service. The role is remote.

Key responsibilities

• Design and build automation frameworks that let other engineers provision, configure and repair fleet infrastructure.
• Extend the observability stack (metrics, logs, traces, alerts) and build dashboards and visualizations on fleet health, capacity and operational trends.
• Build system health tooling that detects failing hardware, drifting configuration and capacity risk before they become incidents.
• Lead technical design discussions, write design documents and drive large features from design through rollout, including migration and backfill work.
• Partner with the on-call rotation to turn recurring toil and incident findings into automation and better signals.

Required profile

• 7+ years of backend development in an enterprise environment, in an object-oriented or systems language (Java, Rust, C++, C#, Go or similar).
• Experience designing automation frameworks, building large-scale systems on thousands of servers, and creating tooling others depend on daily.
• Strong Linux fundamentals and comfort in bare-metal or hybrid environments rather than fully managed cloud.
• Professional experience using AI-assisted development tools (Gemini, Cursor, Claude Code or similar).
• Full software development lifecycle experience, proactive communication in a remote setting, and analytical thinking on ambiguous problems.

Required skills

• Working knowledge of an observability stack (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, ELK, Datadog or equivalent), including instrumentation and alert design.
• Bonus points: Java, Ansible, Salt, Puppet, Chef, Terraform, SLOs and error budgets, PromQL, time-series databases, Linux internals, hard drive performance and SMR, and model/report building.
