Senior Structural Engineer - Hydro & Dams

About the role

WSP is looking for a Senior Structural Engineer in Hydro & Dams to lead the structural analysis, design, assessment and rehabilitation of hydroelectric, dam and water-resources projects. The role covers technical leadership from feasibility studies and detailed engineering through construction support, dam safety evaluations, rehabilitation programs and operational assessments. It requires more than 10 years of relevant experience and advanced English and French.

Key responsibilities

• Lead structural design, analysis and assessment of dams, spillways, intakes, powerhouses, penstocks, galleries and retaining structures
• Perform advanced structural analyses for reinforced concrete, steel and composite structures
• Lead condition assessments, rehabilitation studies and asset management programs for existing facilities
• Develop design criteria, calculations, technical specifications and construction documentation
• Review and approve designs, drawings, reports and deliverables prepared by project teams
• Evaluate structures under static, dynamic, seismic, hydraulic, thermal and environmental loads
• Support dam safety assessments, risk evaluations and regulatory compliance
• Coordinate with geotechnical, hydrotechnical, civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental specialists
• Mentor junior and intermediate engineers and take part in site inspections and construction reviews
• Review contractor submittals and shop drawings, ensure compliance with standards and dam safety requirements
• Support project planning, budgeting, scheduling and technical proposals, and advise clients and stakeholders

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with a specialization in Structural Engineering; Master's or Ph.D. preferred
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng. or equivalent) designation preferred
• More than 10 years of structural engineering experience, including hydroelectric, dam, water-retaining or major civil projects
• Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and covering feasibility, design, construction, commissioning and operation phases
• Advanced written and spoken English and French, mandatory

Required skills

• Structural analysis and design, reinforced concrete and steel design
• SAP2000, ETABS, SAFE, STAAD.Pro, MIDAS, ANSYS or equivalent
• Seismic analysis and familiarity with Canadian, North American and international design codes
• Structural assessments, rehabilitation studies and life-cycle evaluations
• Microsoft Office Suite and engineering documentation tools
