Principal Engineer – Electrical Engineering (Data Centers)

About the role

Join AECOM’s Bogota office as a Principal Engineer focused on electrical engineering for data centers. You will lead the design and implementation of power systems that support high‑availability, scalable data‑center operations.

Key responsibilities

• Design electrical systems for data centers, including power distribution, emergency power (UPS, generators), lighting and grounding, ensuring reliability and scalability.
• Perform power load calculations and capacity planning for IT equipment, cooling systems and infrastructure, supporting future growth.
• Select and specify electrical equipment such as transformers, switchgear, UPS units, circuit breakers and distribution panels, complying with safety standards.
• Design redundancy and fault‑tolerant features, including dual power feeds, backup power solutions and automatic switchover mechanisms.
• Integrate energy‑efficient strategies, renewable energy use and storage systems to reduce consumption and carbon footprint.
• Coordinate with mechanical and HVAC engineers to align electrical requirements with cooling infrastructure.
• Ensure compliance with industry standards (Uptime Institute, TIA‑942‑B, IEEE, IEC, NFPA, NEC) and prepare detailed design documentation.
• Supervise testing, commissioning and troubleshooting of electrical systems during installation.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field.
• Minimum 6 years of experience designing data‑center electrical infrastructure and power systems.
• Strong knowledge of data‑center tier standards, load calculations, equipment selection and redundancy planning.
• Proficiency with electrical design and simulation tools such as AutoCAD, ETAP, DIALux or SKM Power Tools.
• Experience with arc‑flash calculations and short‑circuit coordination studies.
• Ability to review contractor submittals, shop drawings and RFIs.
