Principal Engineer - Secondary Substations (T&D)

About the role

AECOM is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead the design of secondary electrical systems for high‑voltage transmission and distribution projects in Bogota. The role focuses on protection, control, and SCADA integration for large EHV grid substations.

Key responsibilities

• Design protection and control schemes, set relay parameters, and develop interlock systems for secondary substation equipment.
• Produce single‑line diagrams, protection logic diagrams, metering layouts, cable termination diagrams, and cable schedules.
• Conduct relay coordination, load‑flow, short‑circuit, transient stability, motor‑starting, and arc‑flash studies.
• Develop control‑panel layouts, GA drawings, functional block diagrams and BOMs, and define SCADA communication architectures.
• Review design documentation for compliance with IEC, IEEE and utility specifications, and support FAT, commissioning and site integration.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) with at least 10 years of relevant experience.
• Proven experience leading large design teams on HV plant design for EHV grid substations, preferably in a global consultancy.
• Experience with grid utilities and familiarity with international standards (IEC, IEEE, ANSI, etc.).
• Fluent English (oral and written); Spanish is advantageous.

Required skills

• HV substation secondary design and protection‑control engineering.
• Relay coordination studies (over‑current, earth‑fault, distance, motor protection).
• Power system analysis: load flow, short‑circuit, transient stability, arc‑flash.
• SCADA communication scheme development and system integration.
• Knowledge of IEC/IEEE standards and utility specifications.
• Familiarity with GIS/AIS EHV substation primary design.
