Senior Engineer – Secondary Substations (Transmission & Distribution)

About the role

AECOM is seeking a Senior Engineer to lead the design and delivery of secondary engineering systems for high‑voltage substations. The role covers protection, control, automation and communication systems across all project phases, ensuring technical compliance, constructability and reliable operation.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and deliver secondary design documentation for HV substations, including schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules and panel layouts.
• Develop protection and control philosophies and contribute to Basis of Design documentation.
• Design AC/DC auxiliary systems, control circuits, interlocking and automation interfaces.
• Support relay configuration and protection scheme design (distance, differential, over‑current, bus‑bar, transformer protection).
• Coordinate with primary, civil and SCADA/telecom disciplines to ensure integrated, clash‑free designs.
• Provide technical input for estimates, change management and risk mitigation.
• Support testing, factory acceptance, site testing and commissioning activities.
• Assist in resolving technical issues during construction, energisation and commissioning.

Required profile

• Electrical Engineer with at least 4 years of experience in secondary systems for HV/EHV substations.
• Proven track record delivering secondary design packages for EPC or design‑build substation projects.
• Familiarity with international standards (IEC, IEEE, ANSI, Australian and Middle‑East codes) and strong knowledge of protection & control systems.
• Ability to coordinate across multiple engineering disciplines and work independently.
• Fluent in English, both oral and written.

• Protection & control systems, substation secondary circuits and interlocking.
• AC/DC auxiliary systems and relay protection schemes (distance, differential, over‑current).
• Relay families: ABB, Siemens, GE, SEL (configuration, mapping, settings).
• SCADA protocols and communication standards (IEC 61850, Modbus, DNP3).
• Engineering tools: AutoCAD, EPLAN, ETAP.
